The cathedral is one of the largest domed buildings in the world (101.5m high) and over 100kg of gold leaf was used to cover the 21.8m-high dome. The cathedral is dedicated to St. Isaac of Dalmatia whose feast day (30th of May) coincided with the birthday of Peter the Great, the founder of this city.

It took 40 years to build and over 1000 people to carry out the work. The cathedral’s interior has 16 different kinds of marble and is richly decorated with mosaics and paintings by famous Russian artists.

From 1858 until the revolution it was the main cathedral of the Russian empire and afterwards it was turned into a museum.

The cathedral can be visited during the city-tour.
