The fortress is the oldest building in St. Petersburg. It was founded on 27th May 1703 and from that year we celebrate this day as the birthday of the city. Peter the Great planned it as a defence against the Swedes but defeated them before it was finished.
The most beautiful building of the fortress is the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul. It is the highest building of the city – 122.5 m. From the very early years this cathedral was used as a burial-vault of the Russian Royal family and now you can see here the tombs of all the Russian emperors from Peter the Great to the last Russian tsar- Nicholas the II and his family.
The fortress can be visited during the city- tour.
