The Russian Museum is the largest museum of Russian art in the world and it was the first state museum of Russian fine art in the country. It was established in 1895 in St Petersburg under the decree of the last Russian tsar, Nicholas II.

Today the unique and comprehensive collection of the Russian Museum is an exceptional opportunity to see the development of artistic ideas and culture in Russia over a period of nearly two and a half centuries. The collection of the museum spans the period from the 17th to 20th century, and includes old icons, portraits of Peter the Great, Catherine the Great and other members of the Russian Royal family, paintings by Aivazovsky, Repin, Malevich and many others.
